Winners travel to Kingston on VIA Rail from anywhere in Canada
(KINGSTON, Ont.) –. A cross-Canada contest marking Sir John A. Macdonald’s 200th birthday has just been launched by SirJohnA2015.ca a non-partisan not-for-profit agency charged with raising national awareness of Macdonald’s life, legacy and 200th birthday in 2015. Kingston, Ontario is Sir John A’s hometown.
All Canadians are eligible. Via Rail roundtrips for two to Kingston from each of four regions—east, west, central and north--will be awarded to winners chosen from those submitting pictures of things in their towns that should be, or already are, named for Macdonald.
According to Gordon Gower, Director of Digital for SirJohnA2015.ca, “the contest is intended to help spread the word about Sir John A’s birthday, AND to create a living tribute to our First Prime Minister by collecting A. Macdonal across Canada”.
“History can be a lot of fun and we hope people from the various regions of Canada can join in to make this anniversary a ‘cross Canada special,’” says Gower. “We’re deploying today’s social media tools to examine our past. We want people to get outside, walk about with their smartphones and tweet us their pictures. All the picture will be posted to the contest entries page.”
Gower explains that as these pictures arrive from across the country, Canadians will be asked to “vote” on their favourites by re-tweeting them.
“The pictures with the most retweets by Canada Day will be entered into the play-offs.,” says Gower. “We want people to encourage friends and family to retweet the pics to improve chances of making each regional playoff round. Tweet us a pic of something in your town that is named, or could be named, for Sir John A. Macdonald.
"Pics that make the playoffs will be paired off and pitted against one another in head-to head 'bracket' challenge voting. The winning image in each round of voting advances to the next round until we find the most popular pics from each region, and bring these folks to Kingston,” Gower explains.
“We’re also issuing a special challenge to Kingston, Ontario residents to help ‘sweeten the prize pot’ for the contest.”
