Arthur Milnes, Commissioner of the Sir John A. Macdonald Bicentennial Commission, along with Oak Ridges-Markham MPP Dr. Helena Jaczek, YRDSB Chair Anna DeBartolo, TrusteeAda Yeung and Superintendent of SchoolsDr. Lisa Walsh were just some of the dignitaries who head-lined the special event.
Milnes presented the students with a framed portrait of Sir John A. Macdonald that will now be displayed proudly in the school near Toronto that bears the Father of Confederation’s name.
In honour of the multi-racial makeup of the student body, Milnes used his remarks to remind the school community that Canada itself was founded by an immigrant to our shores. “And the second Prime Minister of Canada, Alexander Mackenzie, he too was born across the seas,” Milnes said. “It just goes to show you that in Canada anything is possible.”
The school community proudly joined together and sang the school song, From Far and Wide, under the impressive direction of teacher and choir leader Katie Moore.
SJAM! Reach out and show the world
That we can! Work together big or small
Let’s get! Together and make a difference
Show you who we are and where we’re from
And all the places we will go
Readers of this newsletter will find a recording of this wonderful song at the bottom of this post.
