Kingston: The non-profit, non-partisan Sir John A. Macdonald Bicentennial Commission is pleased to announce that the Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, Chief Justice of Canada, will be leading a Sir John A. Macdonald-themed walking tour of downtown Kingston on September 27.
“We are honoured that Chief Justice McLachlin has graciously agreed to lead our Sir John A. walk later this month,” said Arthur Milnes, Commissioner of the Sir John A. Macdonald Bicentennial Commission. “This will allow Queen’s University Law students and local high school students the rarest of opportunities to learn about Canada’s history and the Supreme Court from the Chief Justice herself.”
Chief Justice McLachlin is the 17th Chief Justice of Canada. She is also the first woman to hold this vitally important position.
The Queen’s University Law School is partnering with the Sir John A. Macdonald Bicentennial Commission in presenting Chief Justice McLachlin’s walking tour.
In leading the walking tour, Chief Justice McLachlin joins former Prime Ministers Paul Martin and John Turner, Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty, Senator Linda Frum, leading broadcast journalists Lloyd Robertson, Steve Paikin and Kady O’Malley, astronaut Marc Garneau, Sir John A. biographer Richard Gwyn, hockey-broadcasterDon Cherry and other distinguished Canadians who have served as walk leaders in the past.
Last September the Chief Justice’s colleague, Mr. Justice Thomas Cromwell of the Supreme Court of Canada, also led the walk for students.
These special tours are part of the Commission’s efforts to raise awareness amongst Canadians about the fast-approaching bicentennial, in 2015, of Sir John A. Macdonald’s birth.
