Free Stilt, Mask and Giant Puppet Workshop
In partnership with Artfest Kingston and SALON Acting Company, SirJohnA2015 is offering a series of free workshops with Shadowland Theatre, a group of Toronto-based professionals famous for creating spectacular community pageants that feature giant puppets and masks, stilt-walking, colourful costumes and dramatic music.
These Workshops teach skills, and build giant masks and puppets for unveiling in Kingston’s Canada Day Parade.
This pageant is part of SirJohnA2015’s strategy for raising local and national awareness of John A. Macdonald’s Bicentennial in 2015, and the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017. John A; his wife, Isabella; George Étienne Cartier; Thomas D’Arcy McGee and George Brown will be there, larger than life.
“We’re hoping to recreate a 19th Century election atmosphere and move it through Kingston’s historic streets. Supporters and detractors. Pork barrels and bribes. Giant Tories and Grits. Music and comedy. Heartbreak and love. Not to mention ghosts. This is a really great opportunity to work alongside skilled theatre professionals, help create the show, and perform in it for an audience of thousands.” So says Jim Garrard, Executive Producer for SirJohnA2015 and SALON Acting Company.
Workshops take place on weekends at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Manse and in City Park. Dates are June 13, 14, 15, 28, 29, 30 and July 1. Participants are invited to take part on any or all of these dates.
